5-aminnolevulinic acid (5-ALA, C5H9NO3, Mr: 131.13; CAS No.: 106-60-5) is an organic compound containing oxygen and nitrogen elements. As an essential precursor for biosynthesis of tetrapyrrole compounds such as heme, chlorophyll and vitamin B12, this non-protein amino acid is widely found in bacteria, fungi, animals and plants, having important effects on plant photosynthesis and cellular energy metabolism.
